To call Sag Harbor simply a village in the Hamptons does not do justice to the thriving local culture that exists within the town. Sag Harbor and its immediate surrounds feature almost all of the things that make the Hamptons such a joy (and not just in the summer). You’ll find farm stands selling the freshest food, relaxing beaches, beautiful bay views, great shopping and, of course, the best restaurants in Sag Harbor that serve up incredibly tasty fare.

For first timers to Sag Harbor, the town has a rich history as a major port for the whaling industry. Much like Nantucket, you’ll see whale motifs on top of door frames, etched onto public benches, or even adorning walls as art. Nowadays, Sag Harbor has moved well beyond its past and invites visitors with a surprising amount of things to do and excellent food options, all within the quaint village of Sag Harbor with its beautiful architecture.

Breakfast

Estia’s Little Kitchen

Estia’s is the perfect place for breakfast in Sag Harbor. There are certainly other options for lunch in and around Sag Harbor, but nowhere really competes with the quality of food and vibe at Estia’s. The restaurant bills itself as ‘eclectic Mexican-American’ which, as you’ll find out, means you’ll get some interesting Mexican-inspired dishes that are innovative and uncommon.

Local tip: Go early (we mean before they open) or prepare to be standing in line for a little while.

And if you do need to wait for a table, don’t despair because Estia’s has a beautiful garden area where you’ll be very happy to sit with a Bloody Mary or beer while waiting for your table. This isn’t a restaurant you go to be seen at, but is the perfect place for breakfast, particularly when Sag Harbor village is too busy and you need a little bit more space (we’re looking at you, July 4th Weekend).

Estia’s isn’t walking distance from Sag Harbor village so you’ll need to drive the short distance from the town to the restaurant. Having said that, it’s well worth the journey.

Lunch

Le Bilboquet

Le Bilboquet is unequivocally the ultimate upscale lunch spot in Sag Harbor. Locals tell us that Le Bilboquet is the hottest restaurant in Sag Harbor. Luckily, this isn’t just for the impossibly cool vibe. The food is the principal reason why Le Bilboquet is one of the best restaurants in Sag Harbor.

One might call this the impossible reservation to get in Sag Harbor given the very healthy celebrity appearances at Le Bilboquet, including what Hamptons locals will call “Bravo-lebrities” (for the uninitiated, Bravo-lebrities are personalities who have come to fame by way of programs on Bravo). In short, if you manage to get a table at Le Bilboquet for lunch, you’ll very likely be rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous (or at least the famous).

Le Bilboquet is also an amazing choice for sunset dinner though it closes early than other restaurants so it’s not the best if you’re looking for a late dinner. Regardless of when you go, expect a scene that is even more high end than their other locations in New York City’s Upper East Side, Palm Beach and other locations around the country.

Sag Harbor Tavern

Sag Harbor Tavern is a newer addition to Sag Harbor food scene and has very quickly risen in the ranks to cement its place as one of the best restaurants in Sag Harbor. Those from New York City will know it as the sister restaurant to Red Hook Tavern in Brooklyn which has built an indestructible reputation for its incredible burger.

And we are very glad to report that the burger at Sag Harbor Tavern delivers just as expected. The burger (and frankly everything else on the menu) is absolutely fantastic. Overall, the team has done an excellent job at creating a great space to eat and socialize but without simply transplanting a New York City institution to the Hamptons. Sag Harbor Tavern indulges in the beauty of Sag Harbor’s surrounds and plays to its charm, rather than trying to recreate a New York City experience (thankfully).

Sag Harbor Tavern is also a very cool dinner vibe, but their last order is 9:30 pm and so is a bit earlier than some other restaurants.

Page at 63 Main

Page is the quintessential staple right in the heart of Sag Harbor village. Thankfully, it’s far easier to get a reservation at Page than Le Bilboquet for lunch (or Tutto il Giorno for dinner), but you should still make sure to ring ahead to make a booking. One of the reasons Page is one of the best restaurants in Sag Harbor is because it’s wonderfully consistent in the quality of food: you know you’re always going to get an excellent meal.

Page prides itself on serving up delicious, unpretentious food at its finest, but yet somehow set within a gorgeous building – or outdoor seating is available in summer as well. Having said that, you might be lucky enough to get an 80-year-old lobster (yes, lobsters can live even longer than that).

Dinner

Beacon

When seasoned locals are asked to name the best restaurants in Sag Harbor, the honest truth is that quite a few names come up (which goes to show how many great restaurants this little town has). One name that came up a little bit more than the rest is Beacon, an upscale restaurant that combines waterfront views, excellent food and a (surprisingly?) cool bar scene. Some even go so far as to say that Beacon is the best restaurant in the Hamptons.

Beacon is located above the Sag Harbor Cove Yacht Club so you’ll be dining with views of the water. If you take a later reservation, you’ll find a more lively crowd that is a great mix of regulars and visitors who have heard the name. Beacon is only open in the summer, but the group has sister restaurants (including the Bell & Anchor) that are open year round.

Tutto il Giorno

If Le Bilboquet is the place to see and be seen in Sag Harbor for lunch, the same might be said of Tutto il Giorno for the evening. But at Tutto, you’re here for the scene and the incredible Italian food.

The team at Tutto have really outdone themselves with their Sag Harbor location. The restaurant is designed beautifully with a boho theme (and that makes sense given it’s connected to Urban Zen, a stunning luxury lifestyle store founded by Donna Karan). Additionally, the staff are always impeccable in their service.

Also – and this is quite exceptional for the Hamptons given the cost of guacamole in the area – you won’t feel like you’re being ripped off at yet another Hamptons restaurant with average food.

The crowd at Tutto is typically older but don’t confuse that for being slow. The ambience is amazing with all the hustle and liveliness that you want out of a good night out in the Hamptons. Tutto also has a bar area that is perfect if you can’t get in for dinner. Stop by before or after your dinner at another restaurant just to soak up that characteristic Tutto vibe.

And for a drink

The American Hotel

The American Hotel is one of the oldest institutions in all of the Hamptons. It might not be one of the best restaurants in Sag Harbor, but it’s absolutely the perfect place to enjoy a martini before or after your meal.

The team provides immaculate hospitality and white table-cloth service, an it’s located right in the heart of Sag Harbor village so you won’t have to go too far to enjoy the ambience of the space. The character is everywhere throughout the hotel, with remnants of Sag Harbor’s heyday as a whaling town throughout the almost two centuries-old American Hotel.

If you do decide to eat at The American Hotel, you’ll still get an excellent meal that you’ll be very happy with. They’re known for their older-style American cuisine.
