The Hamptons has long had a reputation for pristine beaches, incredible restaurants and places to party that rival Ibiza and Mykonos, but a closely guarded secret of locals and frequent visitors is the thriving offering of farm stands. The best farm stands in the Hamptons offer some of the freshest and tastiest food you can get in the state – I wouldn’t be surprised if the farm stands leave a stronger memory than even some of the incredible food you’ll enjoy dining out.

Farm stands dot the landscape of the Hamptons (and generally in the northeast of the U.S.) which means there’s usually always one close enough if you need a treat or ingredients for a big dinner. These farm stands take quality of produce seriously because, ultimately, farm-to-table dining isn’t just a cool trend like it is in the city, it’s the Hamptons lifestyle.

1. Round Swamp Farm

A meal from Round Swamp Farm is so much a part of the fabric of the Hamptons lifestyle that we think getting a gourmet takeaway meal from Round Swamp Farm is one of the essential things you must do in the Hamptons. The sheer selection of premade gourmet foods and top-shelf ingredients is enough to send you in a dizzy spell – and you might need to watch for that because Round Swamp Farm is just plainly expensive.

The family behind the operation has taken the simple farm stand and turned into a gourmet feast for the senses with everything you can imagine and more, whether seasonal fruits, zucchini bread, jams, quiches or painfully good cookies and pies. It’s also a great place to take home a little bit of the Hamptons (if you need a gift for me, I’ll take a jar of their pickles).

If you’ve read our other food-related articles, you’ll know that I am a self-appointed dessert connoisseur (Syrian desserts, South African desserts, the list goes on), so believe me when I assert that the pies at Round Swamp Farm are the best in the Hamptons. There’s a reason why Round Swamp Farm has risen to cult prominence, and the pies are a big part of it.

Go early in the morning if you don’t want to miss out on their peach pie. And you don’t want to miss out on it.

I haven’t really put my finger on how they manage to turn out such a variety of savory and sweet foods and maintain quality, but they do – and they do it every time, which is why this is one of the best farm stands in the Hamptons. The premium for consistency and quality is well worth it.

2. Balsam Farms

Amagansett’s premier farm stand has cemented its place as the standard for supreme quality, sustainability and unrivaled taste. Balsam Farms is set in an adorable wooden stand and is reminiscent of what a farm stand would have looked like before they became serious operations.

They’ve got all the crisp lettuce varieties, fresh tomatoes and fragrant herbs that will make your lunch or dinner a few notches better. You can also pick up flowers – because who doesn’t like to be gifted a nice bouquet.

The fun and great produce doesn’t stop after summer at Balsam. You can pick up amazing pumpkins in October. Luckily for us, you can get their freshly made homemade chips and cookies long after the peak summer season ends. And sometimes you need cookies in the colder months more than you do the summer.

If you need another reason to give Balsam Farms a shot, they’re known by locals as being generous donors to the community. It’s the type of thing that makes the Hamptons the special place that it is.

3. Amber Waves

Amber Waves bills itself as an oceanside farm for thoughtful cooks and aspiring growers. This ethos truly manifests itself in the atmosphere and vibe of the farm and market in Amagansett with its sprawling meadows and picnic tables. The team at Amber Waves has done a great job of creating a space that has the quaintness of a farm stand, the convenience of a supermarket, and the joy of outdoor living.

A farm stand can’t earn a spot on the best farm stands in the Hamptons unless it offers the full range of foods, and that includes treats. The pies at Amber Waves rival even those of Round Swamp Farm, but maybe part of the reason is that Amber Waves uses local ingredients to make their pies.

One of the other reasons we love Amber Waves is their strong programming of summer cooking and farm classes. If you’ve got children, we highly recommend enrolling them in one of the summer classes.

4. Pike Farms

When it’s the season, you’ll find the best-quality tomatoes at Pike Farms which is known generally for growing some of the most sought-after produce in the Hamptons. Pike Farms is one of those places that you’ll accidentally drive by when Waze takes you off the main road, and you’ll be very glad you made the decision to stop.

The corn at Pike’s is also the stuff of legend, vying for first position on the list of best corn in the Hamptons with Halsey Farm. But it doesn’t stop there at Pike Farm: their strawberries, blueberries and raspberries are all picked at the perfect time which makes them juicier than your average berry and therefore much more exciting on the palate.

5. Halsey Farm

There are three generations working on Halsey Farm which traces its history back to the middle of the 17th century. In our view, if a farming operation can run for hundreds of years, they’re doing something right. The produce at the farm stand comes directly from the field which means you’re getting the freshest produce on offer in the area.

Locals made it very clear that Halsey Farm has the best corn in the Hamptons. There’s still competition for that title (Pike Farms), but Halsey seems to take it and hold it every year. Just for good measure, Halsey also offers its own selection of baked goods like pies. But make sure to keep an eye out for their watermelons which are even more succulent in the late summer.

If you’re looking for the right place to buy flowers, Halsey Farm has you covered with more flower options than you imagine.

6. Serene Green Farm

Rather unexpectedly, Serene Green Farm has excellent fish on account of its arrangements with local fisherman. If there were ever anyone to notice a gap in the market, it was the team at Serene Green who are bridging land and sea. This is one of the few farm stands that is open year round, and they’re always serving the best produce, making them one of the best farm stands in the Hamptons.

Locals also mentioned that their figs are spectacular. Otherwise, they have a range of prepared foods (like the impossibly tasty quiches), and an abundance of fresh produce. They also serve sno-balls during the summer months with a variety of fun flavors like natural cocont and lemonade. No other farm stand in the Hamptons does it quite like Serene Green!

Special Mention: The butcher at Cromer’s Market

We’ll admit that Cromer’s Market isn’t quite a farm stand more than it is a local grocery store, but we couldn’t not mention the fantastic butcher at Cromer’s Market. This is consistently one of the best places to buy meat in the Hamptons. They also have their own smoker, so if you’re lucky you might be able to get their house-made sausages.

If you needed more reason to go to Cromer’s Market for their meat, they’re known for providing the highest-quality meats to the premium restaurants in the Hamptons. So if you find yourself dining at one of the best restaurants in the Hamptons, you might be eating meat from Cromer’s Market.
