New Yorkers take coffee seriously – and no, I’m not talking about Starbucks. Lower Manhattan is unquestionably home to some of the best cafes in New York City (even if the Brooklyn folks may dispute this).

Some cafés offer coffee-on-the-go (with pre-order apps for those heading to FiDi), while others offer a mix of French-style pastries to start your morning. But my favorites are those cafes which fuse breakfast menus with the glory of New York City dining culture.

In my opinion, one of the greatest joys of visiting or living in New York City is tapping into the neighborhood dining sub-cultures. From the wine bars and cute restaurants of the West Village to niche dessert crawls through the Lower East Side, you can usually find me eating my way through Lower Manhattan.

However, when it comes to coffee, I’ll be making my way to Tribeca, my favorite area to stay in New York City. While Chelsea and West Village are always buzzing, I prefer the quieter streets of Tribeca. With some of the highest property prices in Manhattan, this neighborhood is full of the cutest cafes which cater to the young professionals and families who call Tribeca home.

If you’re keen to learn more about this neighborhood, I love this walking tour which offers exclusive insights into 300 years of Manhattan history in Tribeca. But before you do any sightseeing, you’ll need to start your day with a cup of coffee.

1. Rigor Hill Market

Rigor Hill Market is my go-to among the best cafes in Tribeca. But this small shop is so much more than a cup of coffee.

From the team behind the ever-wonderful One White Street next door, Rigor Hill Market oozes farm-to-table vibes. Unsurprisingly, you’ll find an excellent cup of coffee here. However, Rigor Hill Market also offer a unique brunch spread using their homemade sourdoughs and focaccia. My go-to Tribeca breakfast sandwich is their grilled mushroom with spicy mayonnaise, but I’m sure you’ll find something which calls your attention.

With a little on-site grocer, Rigor Hill Market is also an ideal neighborhood spot to collect fresh sourdough and vegetables. If you’re looking for something a little decadent after coffee, I’m a big fan of Rigor Hill’s homemade ice cream (particularly the caramelized honey with chamomile).

2. Gotan

If you’re hungry and looking for a substantive brunch in Tribeca, Gotan is my top recommendation. Set on the bustling corner of Franklin and W Broadway, Gotan offers a Middle Eastern menu with some seriously fresh flavors. If you’re visiting during the summer months, grab one of those outdoor tables and watch Tribeca come to life around you.

Compared to other cafes in Tribeca, Gotan’s menu is small. And in my professional opinion, that is a sign you’re about to have an excellent meal. If it’s your first visit, you’ll want to go for the Gotan Breakfast complete with labneh cheese, zaatar oil, spicy zchug sauce and eggs.

If you’re getting closer to lunchtime, their cauliflower salad is a favorite among my Tribeca friends. Fresh, hearty and with the exact pinch of cumin necessary to transport you continents away from New York City.

3. Interlude

Bringing a subtle Japanese chicness to the streets of Tribeca, Interlude is the type of local cafe where you know they’ll remember your name.

A relative newcomer to the Tribeca cafe scene, Interlude goes beyond high-quality coffee and offers one of the best cups of ceremonial-grade matcha in New York City. Couple this with their in-house freshly baked pastriesand it’s no surprise that Interlude gets very busy with the post-nursery pick-up crowd.

If you’re after something sweet, I usually lean towards Interlude’s sesame banana loaf or matcha madeleine. But the truth is that you can’t really go wrong, with each of their pastries masterfully fusing subtle fresh flavors.

With a minimalist design, tons of natural lighting and soft music on play, Interlude is also an excellent spot to sit with your laptop for an hour or two.

4. Two Hands

It’s no secret that Australian-style brunch has really taken hold in New York. Among our favorites is Two Hands, which will quickly transport you to the laneways of Melbourne.

If you know anything about Aussie cafes, you’ll be heading to Two Hands for the smashed avocado toast. But if you’re after something with a little more nuance, I’m a big fan of their quinoa salmon bowl complete with a six-minute egg and turmeric quinoa. If you’re more of a sweet breakfast type, the lemon poppyseed waffle hits the spot and, if you ask me, the presentation is Michelin-worthy.

Two Hands is a pretty large space, which means you may be lucky enough to get a weekend brunch table on a whim. Although for those familiar with the best cafes in Tribeca, you’ll often need some serious luck for Tribeca brunch seating.

5. Kaffe Landskap

I love Kaffe Landskap for having that true cozy, neighborhood atmosphere which I always associate with Tribeca. With a strong Scandinavian undertone, Landskap aims to be a ‘sustainable community‘ and you’ll find a menu here which is full of both heart and health.

In line with their sustainability goals, the menu here actively promotes healthy eating. Landskap is a long way from the pizza, donuts and other desserts New York City is famous for. However, you will still find some excellent Danish-style cardamon buns on the menu. I’m a big fan of Landskap’s breakfast wraps, including the breakfast burrito and quinoa power wrap (with homemade beet almond hummus!).

Pair that with some excellent Tribeca coffee and you’ve got yourself one of the best brunches in Tribeca.

Those with dietary requirements will be excited to know that Landskap has one of the best gluten-free and vegan menus in Lower Manhattan. Better yet, all of their condiments, sauces and more are made in-house which means you don’t need to be nervous about half-baked answers to your dietary concerns.

With only two Tribeca locations (Tribeca North & Tribeca South), and two Denver locations (Union Station/RiNo & LoDo), it’s pretty clear that Kafe Landskap is catering to a very specific type of customer. And we’re here for it.
