Langkawi is truly one of the stars in the Malaysian tourism industry. And for good reason. Langkawi seemingly has it all: some of the best beaches in the Andaman Sea, a little bit more of a relaxed, family-friendly environment than neighboring Thailand, and some magnificent waterfalls and short walks. But whenever I’m talking about Malaysia, it always comes back to the food.

Whether you’re a traveling vegetarian (or vegan), or simply looking for a bit more a plant-based diet while on the road, you don’t need to worry about finding vegetarian food in Langkawi. In fact, I’d argue the best vegetarian restaurants in Langkawi offer some of the best meals I’ve eaten in Malaysia, period.

In this ultimate guide to the best vegetarian restaurants in Langkawi, I’ve selected some of my favorites across the island. Whether you’re hanging by Cenang beach, or off on a day trip to the north of the island, with this guide on hand you’ll be able to locate the best vegetarian restaurants in Langkawi.

With that, here are my favorite vegetarian restaurants in Langkawi, Malaysia.

Melior Cafe Langkawi

In the town of Kuah sits one of Langkawi’s most famous vegetarian restaurants: Melior Cafe. This completely vegetarian restaurant is an absolute gem for those seeking plant-based protein sources in Langkawi. With a modern, peaceful aesthetic, Melior isn’t your average neighborhood restaurant. Rather, it’s slightly trendy and the kind of restaurant you could imagine sitting with your laptop for a few hours.

The menu here features both Malaysian and Western cuisine. You’ll also find an extensive smoothie and bowl menu (Buddha bowl anyone?). One of the things I love doing most at Melior is mixing and matching cuisines. There’s nothing quite like a nasi lemak or curry laksa, followed by some heart-warming coconut pancakes.

FatCupid

Hidden in the casual and reasonably priced La Pari Pari Hotel, FatCupid might well be my favorite spot for vegetarian food in Langkawi (despite not being fully vegetarian). Before traveling to Langkawi, my Malaysian friends all kept telling me that I must go eat at FatCupid. And there’s the lesson for you: the locals always know best.

The menu at FatCupid clearly states which dishes are completely vegetarian and/or vegan. This means you don’t have anything to worry about with the staff not understanding your specific dietary requirements – these guys are professionals. You’ll find on the menu both Western favourites and Malaysian delights. When I’m traveling in Malaysia, I’ll generally order Asian food and I have to be frank, I’ve never tried the Western food here. However, when looking around the restaurant, you’ll often see many servings of the vegan burger.

Unquestionably, the two standout dishes at FatCupid are the vegan Nyonya laksa and the vegan lontong. In my opinion, both dishes deserve praise for similar reasons (and you should probably order both). These two curry dishes have some of the heartiest broth I’ve ever tried – full of nutty flavours and natural oils. With differences to match the respective dishes, both curries are usually complete with extremely fresh and firm tofu, tempeh, and my personal favorite: lions mane mushroom.

Fat Frog

Langkawi is a foodie haven and eating is almost a compulsory activity while here. In saying that, I’m not sure why two of the best vegetarian restaurants in Langkawi are fat-shaming. Jokes aside, the Fat Frog might just be one of the most aesthetically gorgeous dining settings in Langkawi. In what can only be described as a mini-estate, the Fat Frog somehow fuses Tuscan patio charm with a farm-to-table atmosphere.

Before we get into the food, the venue itself is worth discussing. The Fat Frog features a wine room, outdoor wood-fire pizza oven and numerous little coves and nooks for seating. The entire restaurant overlooks a gorgeous set of hills and the Fat Frog’s own herb garden. You’ll find that most of the produce used at the Fat Frog is homegrown, and where it’s not they’ll proudly share how they’ve sourced it locally in Langkawi.

While the menu does offer a number of Asian options, it generally leans heavily towards an Italian-inspired, completely vegetarian menu. I’ll be honest it’s very difficult for me to justify eating Italian food in Malaysia. However, when it comes to the Fat Frog, I break all the rules. From 12-inch pizzas to some of the best handmade gnocchi and ravioli outside of Italy. And don’t even get me started on the arancini balls, which come with a homemade pesto mayo.

Best of all is that the menu here is completely vegetarian, making the Fat Frog one of the most unique and best vegetarian restaurants in Langkawi. While the menu leans heavily towards lacto-ovo vegetarian offerings, the team are can outline to you which dishes can be made vegan and what options exist for those on a no onion, no garlic diet (can we please start making this more mainstream?).

Beyond dining, the Fat Frog is also one of my favorite places for a sundowner in Langkawi. With a quality cocktail menu, the Fat Frog is an ideal spot to watch the Southeast Asian sun set behind the glorious hills of Langkawi. I strongly recommend their speciality mojitos, featuring homegrown mint for an extra kick of freshness.

Pegaga Vegan Experience

Set in the gorgeous Ambong Rainforest Retreat (one of my favorite places to stay in Langkawi), Pegaga offers a more high-end vegan experience. After entering the hotel complex, you’ll find the Pegaga restaurant in an elevated, open-window platform high among the trees. One of the reasons I love this restaurant is because you feel like you’re literally eating in the rainforest.

The menu at Pegaga leans towards typical Malaysian offerings, but you will find a number of Western and other vegetarian goodies. In my opinion, the stand out dish here is easily the mushroom tacos from the appetizer menu. Battered mushrooms, fresh avocado and salsa, all with a subtle Malaysian culinary undertone.

From the mains, I generally lean toward the Malaysian dishes. The Rainforest Green Curry might just be one of the best curries in Langkawi. Stuffed with tempeh and tofu, this fragrant coconut, coriander and basil curry base simply hits the spot in all the right ways. The accompanying coconut rice is slightly different to what you’d normally receive, with whole toasted peppercorns in the rice.

If you’re after an elevated vegan experience, Pegaga are famous for their set menus. While these set menus do change, they generally feature a mix of Western and Malaysian dishes.

Warung Jalak Lenteng Langkawi

The small Warung Jalak Lenteng Langkawi is far from being a pure vegetarian restaurant in Langkawi. However, on the north side of Langkawi there really aren’t too many vegetarian options and this small warung, surprisingly, is well equipped to handle vegetarians. The staff here clearly understand what it means for a dish to be vegetarian. In fact, on my last visit, they even explained to me which items did not contain fish sauce.

If you’re in this part of Langkawi (and you should be to visit Tanjung Rhu Beach), I’d recommend stopping past here for an easy, slightly sloppy, meal of Kway Tiao Goreng filled with tofu and egg (if you’re an egg-eater). The staff insist their curry laksa is also vegetarian but I’m yet to try it.

The setting of the warung is gorgeous: down a small residential Lane and overlooking an empty patch of Langkawi Beach.
