If anyone ever told you vegetarian food was boring, these vegetarian restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City prove everyone wrong!

In my opinion, it’s some of the best vegetarian and vegan food I’ve seen in a very long time. If I’m not in the mood for meat and I’m visiting Saigon, I know I’m well taken care of at any of these options.

Being vegetarian in Vietnam has its challenges (we have a guide to help with that). But in Ho Chi Minh City you can expect Michelin Winners, trendy eateries, 100% vegan options (not skimping out on dessert either). You’ll also find interiors that transport you around parts of Vietnam, traditional Vietnamese flavors, bistros inspired by European shores, and plates of food which burst with creativity, imagination and of course, freshness

Hey, there’s even a little sneaky hangover food option for those in dire need of a cure after a big night out! Enjoy, my vegetarian darlings.

1. Shamballa Vegetarian: Food illusions & seasonal-inspired menu

The first of the vegetarian restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City to top this list, Shamballa shows what you can do with a spark of imagination. Everything here is a salute to culinary beauty. The same goes for the restaurant itself, with a sort of boho secret garden feel. I’m in love!

It’s all about creating food illusions. For example, there’s the creme brulee dessert, plated within a giant bird’s egg and resting on a nest. Then you have an “oyster dish” where the plating resembles an oyster shell, however, the inside is filled with a cheese-baked oyster mushroom

Side note: I love all seafood but have never been a fan of fresh oysters. The first time I ever tasted a baked oyster was in Hanoi, and it’s a popular way to serve the mollusk. It changed my whole perception of eating oysters.

Sip back on great cocktails from its rooftop bar, and Shamballa has two locations in District 1 — one dubbed ‘The Teahouse’ and the other ‘The Lounge.’

2. OM Eatery: A super extensive “different” menu

Walking through the entrance of OM Eatery feels like stepping through the pages of a fairytale, as mist wraps around your ankles at the entrance. It’s enchanting!

Within the restaurant, the atmosphere is a little more laid back, yet the smoky extravagance still carries throughout some of the dishes here.

Honoring local Vietnamese ingredients as well as fusion flavors, it’s another one of the vegetarian restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City that plays around with creativity but keeps a traditional decor that reflects Vietnam.

Think grapefruit salad with young lemongrass; truffle mushroom soup (served in a cut-out round ciabatta), collagen flower boat hot pot, abalone mushrooms with coriander sauce, southern ‘khot’ mini pancakes, coconut fried rice (in a half coconut), and more romantic numbers.

3. L’Herbanyste: Eat, swim, mimosas, repeat

Before you go wondering why there’s a pool in the middle of L’Herbanyste, let me clue you up. This is very common in restaurants and bars around Vietnam, even some coffee shops — no word of a lie. And trust me, it sure is appreciated in boiling-hot Saigon!

Not just one of the incredible vegetarian restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City, but it’s also a co-working space, coffee shop, and party venue. Other than the pool there’s a sweet little garden, and if you are traveling with fur babies (or missing yours), it’s pet-friendly

Food is a mix between local and international: deconstructed eggs benedict with truffles; honey veggie soup with triple cheese toasties; various pizzas (garlic cheese pesto or guacamole); buddha bowls served in coconut bowls (super common souvenirs around VN), rainbow plates, and more.

They’re open from breakfast hour to late afternoon — the kitchen closes at 5 pm. And also offer specials like pizza and wine, or bottomless mimosas

4. Kashew Cheese Deli: Dishes featuring vegan cheese

Cheese and wine, anyone? But make it VEGAN! I love this concept: a deli, coffee spot, and wine bar all in one. However, the superhero above everything is Kashew Cheese Deli’s plant-based artisan cheese, made from, well, cashews

Naturally, a lot of “cheese” features across all dishes, and the deli is completely vegan. Morning baguettes loaded with olives and “kashew mozzarella,” “kashew cheesy” nachos, “cheese” boards, pita bread, and sourdough pizzas are examples of what to expect from this delightful vegan locale.

Kashew also hosts cool events like Italian Aperol Spritz nights or Garden Sales.

5. METTA Vegetarian Restaurant: Transport yourself to Hoi An

Feel transported to the streets of Hoi An’s Ancient Town at METTA. From the entrance, it feels as if you’re discovering one of the side alleys in my favorite town in all of Vietnam. And, in fact, the whole concept here is to recreate a little mini “Hoi An.”

Terra cotta interiors with colorful lanterns hanging from the ceiling towels, trees dripping in flowers, and if you’ve ever been to Hoi An, it’s as if you’re sitting at one of the street side restaurants looking out onto the neighboring roads, but it’s all under one roof.

Food-wise pays homage to Hoi An’s cuisine, too, which includes ingredients and dishes that reflect Central Vietnam. Other options on the menu draw from countries around the region, including Korea and Thailand.

6. Chay Garden: A deep-rooted connection with nature

All in the name; towering palms and delicious monsters popping out to say hello in the outdoor area, with lime trees and mini gardens within the inside sections, Chay Garden is a little oasis.

I love this: “Every table tells a story” and it’s exactly what you’ll find here. There are loads of different sections to the restaurant, and each corner is unique. For example, cozy seating beneath lined bookshelves.

Now, onto the food! As one of the vegetarian restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City enlisted by the Michelin, it comes as no surprise. Local ingredients are sourced from local farmers, highlighting the region’s fresh flavors. Presentation is also out-of-the-box and quite arty

P.S. If you’re like me who’s a big soup fan, Chay has some amazing ones that are ultra nutritious. Go for the bright blue butterfly pea flower soup, or the cordyceps and oyster mushrooms soup.

7. Hum: Michelin Bib Gourmand Winner

Look up! Ever been to Singapore and visited the (Instagram) famous tree tunnel hole at Fort Canning Park? Hum’s ‘San Trang’ courtyard corner eerily reminds me of this exact moment! But here, the roof is constructed from hundreds of rice paper sheets from the Lạc Lâm, Trảng Bàng, Vàm Cỏ Tây, and Nhơn Hòa trading villages. It’s sublime and the perfect place for lunch (and photos).

There’s a distinctly whimsical sort of vibe here, even the way the menu is named, and the dishes are presented. But it all makes sense once you realize that Hum is a Michelin Bib Gourmand winner, and has also won plenty of other accolades.

Opt for the ‘Taste’ tasting menu for refined dining moments. Replicating dew drops in the morning on wood, the dish is called ‘Gỏi Pha Lê’ and the salad contains ingredients which promote skin health — how epic is that?! The “Kem Tuyết Chanh Thơm” comes inside a halved green passion fruit.

8. Măng’s Mania: For the flavors of Vietnam

In the mood for good ol’ Vietnamese food? Always busy, always delicious, and with a daily-changing menu, if you’re in Saigon for a couple of days, you’ll always get to sample new foods and flavors at Măng’s Mania

Knowing how to pack a punch full of flavor (like most Vietnamese cuisine does), the menu features classic Vietnamese dishes, which are primarily vegan and are listed on the chalkboard every day.

Indulge in classic Vietnamese rice dishes, noodle soups, wonton soups, clear broth soups, fresh summer rolls, seaweed rolls, and spring rolls, homemade tofu, or choose from a selection of vegan cakes or traditional Vietnamese desserts like chia seed, grass, and jelly soup. Drinks are vegan too and coffees are served with milk alternatives. There’s also kombucha tea and coconuts.

This is one of the top vegetarian restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City for quintessential Vietnamese!

9. Vi Que Kitchen: All-round winner open for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Another Michelin Bib Gourmand winner to add to your list of incredible vegetarian restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City, Vi Que Kitchen is completely plant-based

There’s certainly a definitive fine-dining feel about this restaurant too, and you notice it in the plating as well, like a page out of a French cooking techniques book.

Remember, when a restaurant receives a Michelin Guide endorsement, it’s not just the food they evaluate but the overall restaurant including its interiors and service. Rest assured, Vi Que ticks all of these boxes!

Must-order dishes include the satay hot pot, luffa and jute plant soup, water mimosa delight salad, and pho rolls.

10. Prem Bistro & Café: Gourmet burgers, pizza & pasta

Pink coffee, saffron-infused panna cotta, fig and radicchio salad, pan-seared gobi steak with crispy kale, pizza topped with pulled burrata … Honestly, my mouth waters just typing this!

Traveling with a mixed bunch of vegetarian-happy eaters? Then Prem Bistro & Cafe is where it’s at, and modeled after a classic bistro, the food from this kitchen reflects the same vibe with loads of European-inspired numbers on the menu.

I also love the fact that they’ve kept closely in line with the traditional components of these dishes, so you feel like you’re actually eating a proper homemade pizza dripping in cheese or a Caesar salad (minus the anchovy), but you hardly notice it’s missing meat

P.S. They also sport a rooftop

11. Filthy Vegan: The ultimate hangover cure

District 1 is home to the bulk of hostels and backpacking crowds, and so many of the eateries around this area are there to serve such travelers. Filthy Vegan is a prime example, where everything here was like it was envisioned with a hangover in mind. Because let’s be real, when you’re feeling hungover, all you want is scrumptious naughty foods like pizza and burgers! Or, is that just me?! …

I don’t think so, with a name like that, and the menu here spills out with all sorts of “fast-food” options, just vegan style

Deep fried onion rings with vegan mayo…Vegan no fish and chips with peas or Heinz baked beans…Vegan pizzas … And a whole bunch of bites made with cashew cheese like burgers, hotdogs, pasties … You catch my drift.

Oh, and lest we forget about the vegan desserts: homemade ice cream, chocolate orange ganache, Oreo cheesecake, chocolate raspberry tart, apple pie, and chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce. It’s undoubtedly one of the yummiest vegetarian restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City for “junk food” but made from goodness!
