Calling all coffee snobs (that’s me) and connoisseurs! If there’s one Southeast Asian country that knows what’s up when it comes to coffee, it’s got to be Vietnam. Coffee is, like, serious business here. But if you’re a coffee appreciator, you’ll already know this. Vietnamese coffee has blown up all around the world.

In a city like Hanoi, you won’t just find the classic cà phê sữa đá at every corner cafe, but some insaneeee specialty coffee houses busting out artisanal coffee like it’s hot.

Creative cold brews made from berries, strong slow drips, and delicious latte-based drinks. Good to know; in general, Vietnamese coffee is SUPER strong, so if you get a buzz from only one cup back home, maybe consider a milky-based version like the latte.

Whatever your preference, you’re in good hands. This list of best coffee shops in Hanoi, along with their baristas, seriously understands the art of coffee, that’s for sure. Happy drinking my fellow caffeine heads!

1. Wknd – Espresso blends, Vietnamese classics and yum cold brews

With a passion for espresso-based and quintessential Vietnamese coffee, trendy Wknd Cafe is located around vibey Truc Bach Lake, Ba Dinh side, the perfect place to sip back on a cuppa while watching the stream of cyclists, locals, or swan-boat riders around the lake. It’s also a divine area to take a break from the craziness of the Old Quarter.

The interiors make you think of a delicious caramel macchiato — chairs, tables, and counters are all shades of burnt sienna. Abstract-shaped vases line shelves and paper Japanese lanterns hang from the low ceiling.

Must-try coffee drinks from the Viet coffee list include the cà phê kem béo (a rich, super creamy coffee made with condensed milk and fresh whipped cream). From the espresso side, it’s the espresso tonic. They also serve a lemon cold brew for when sweltering temperatures get too much.

Not a coffee drinker? Try the cold yellow lotus tea doused in a salty cream frosting! The setting and quality coffee deem it one of the best coffee shops in Hanoi.

2. Ourlog – Japan or Hanoi?

If you happen to be visiting must-see sites in the Dong Da area like the Temple of Literature, Ourlog is the place for a caffeine refuel.

It’s almost like this coffee spot has taken a page from Japan, and the entire setup exudes a very calming atmosphere. Pull up a chair at the outside coffee window among the fiddle-leaf ficus and delicious monsters — I’m talking about the plants. (Speaking of, there’s greenery everywhere and so many photo ops.) Or relax inside with the latest issue of Kinfolk or one of the other cool art and lifestyle books lining the shelves.

The menu isn’t overly extensive, but delivers on the goods! Test out the Ourlog creamy salt coffee (made popular in Hue). Non-coffee drinkers can enjoy oolong tea macchiatos or a delish hot choccie topped with marshmallows.

3. Atelier Coffee – For super creative and different coffees, including nitro

Smoked carrot cake lattes, salted caramel renditions, nitro coffee, Ethiopia Hambella pour-overs, and mint candy cigarette espresso cold brews. Sounds interesting, right? The king of creative and seasonal coffee creations, Atelier Coffee is for coffee drinkers who love sipping on something a little different

If you take your coffee extra strong and are in love with Vietnamese coffee, grab one of their cold brew bottles to travel back home. When you’re in the mood for authentic Vietnamese coffee, the ‘Đen Đá’ has a whopping five double shots worth of Fine Robusta espresso, and the ‘Cold Brew’ is the equivalent of two glasses of iced coffee. Just add water and ice and you’re all set.

There are low wooden seats right outside the front of the shop (perfect for people-gazing at the Ba Dinh crowds) or grab one inside. Coffee accessories, equipment, beans, and cute tote bags are also available for purchase.

4. Basket – The masters of slow drip

Phin, pour-over, aeropress, and siphon; Basket is everything to love about specialty coffee!

Think caffeine-boosters like ‘suggacino’ and ‘berrycano’ and a menu that matches the changing seasons. During autumn drinks are heavy with spices, for example, and in summer, brighter and fresh. And this goes for their beans, too. At the moment, it’s all about Colombia Granja Paraiso 92 beans

Iced black coffees arrive in fancy wine glasses and cold brews in double-walled tumblers. Prefer a milkier coffee? Snatch cold renditions in bottles of caramel macchiato, lattes, and Saigon-style bạc xỉu.

Basket means serious pour-over business, which is mesmerizing to watch if you ask me. They also do the classic Vietnamese-style phin coffee, paired perfectly with a slice of banana cake. Other traditional coffees include yogurt coffee.

5. The Patrik – Feeling fancy?

Another contender that’ll transport you elsewhere among our list of the best coffee shops in Hanoi, The Patrik could easily be found along the streets of London. I’m pretty obsessed with its chic black-and-white aesthetics it’s got going on.

Take part — and by take part, mean drink your way through — it’s monthly collections. For example, the Salted Collection: salted coffee, salted matcha lattes, and salted choco lattes. They also make a mean pour-over, as well as strong iced coffee

Apart from the drinks game, their sweet treats are delightful, and a nice change from the typical French-inspired pastries that seem to accompany the coffee shops and cafes in Hanoi (although they do still have extra crispy croissants). Indulge in the layered mille crepe cake available in a matcha flavor, or for something savory, the Russian-style ham and cheese pancakes.

The Patrik is also in Truc Bach (one of my absolute fave areas of the city, especially for snapping photographs of the gorgeous buildings around here).

6. buzzy coffee – Premium coffee near the Old Q

Using premium beans from some of the world’s top coffee-producing countries, buzzy coffee is currently all about that washed Colombia bean, roasted at medium, which they use across all their espresso-based drinks. But beans change every few months, so it really depends on when you’re visiting this spot.

While this might be all about the best coffee shops in Hanoi, buzzy serves a typical Saigon-style coffee: bạc xỉu. It’s smoother and a little more delicate than the typical kick-in-your-butt Hanoi-style coffee because the beverage is made with more fresh milk than coffee.

Local tip: In the north, fresh milk in coffee isn’t popular (condensed milk replaces this), but in HCMC, the coffee style uses fresh milk.

Ever tried coffee with OJ? Order the ‘Cam-ericano.’ It’s an americano-style coffee and water is replaced with orange juice. Another one to try (but it’s not coffee-based) is their take on an iced chocolate. Think oat milk, one gigantic block of ice, and the rest is homemade 54.5% Belgian choc chip and dark cacao sauce — do yourselves a favor, mate!

Pair this with their chocolate loaf cake and you’ll find yourself in a choco coma, not that I’m complaining. If there’s one thing I cannot live without, it’s chocolate.

7. Nil Coffee – For espresso freaks

I’m a very proud #coffeesnob and after another recent trip to Italia, my love affair for espresso was sparked yet again. I’m currently still on the espresso train, especially when I need a quick wake-up!

Nil Coffee’s motto is “more espresso, less depresso,” which I’m absolutely obsessed with and couldn’t have said it better myself.

Choose between arabica or robusta beans for any of your coffee orders, and they have a few cold brews on the menu, including a cold brew tonic and a lemon cold brew which seem to be all the coffee rage at the moment. Personally, I don’t enjoy a lemon cold brew, but enjoy the slight fizz from a coffee tonic.

Also, their Hanoi-style egg coffee (cà phê trứng) is mega-sized, with the espresso shot layering a quarter of the glass and the creamy meringue-y condensed milk goodness loading the rest of the tumbler.

8. Cafe Tòte – For fruity-flavored cold brews

Have you ever tried (or heard of) coffee with sweet sugarcane juice? Or perhaps you have had a coconut coffee before — except the “rococo” from Cafe Tòte is brewed with coconut water only, and not the coco milk, so it doesn’t have that “milkshake” look to it as a lot of the coconut coffees in Vietnam.

Pick which beans you’d prefer when ordering: Rota (part of the Robusta group) or the slightly lighter Aca (from the Arabica group).

Also, how delicious does a mulberry-infused cold brew coffee sound?! They have the regulars like the lemon spin, but this one is a must-try. Their classic ca phe sua da is also incredible.

P.S. This artisanal coffee shop has two locations: one in Hoan Kiem and the other in Ba Dinh

9. Black Market – Pinterest perfect drinks and interiors

‘Coffee is art’ is defined in every sense of the word at BLACK MARKET. The same team behind hai phần tư coffee shop, who if you get the chance, you need to add to your list of the best coffee shops in Hanoi. Both stops are located in Hoan Kiem.

I’d recommend their dirty latte from the espresso-based list, the apricot cold brew, and the cold brew and matcha cream if you’re fans of the green tea powder. You can also upgrade your matcha to a premium blend.

There’s the regular menu, but special coffees are added to this every few weeks; always expect something new.

Prefer tea over coffee? The jasmine tea is served with hot oat milk and candied lotus seeds.

10. Refined coffee  – “Cultural and Creative”

Another Hoan Kiem treasure forming part of the best coffee shops in Hanoi, they create the cutest coffee art over at Refined Coffee

Specifically dark and moody, this adds to the overall trendy ambiance of this spot.

They classify themselves as a phin bar (phin refers to the traditional coffee filter used across the country to make Vietnamese coffee), and the coffee from these artisans is hella strong — just the way I like it.

The baristas know their stuff, and often play around with notes, flavor profiles, and acidity levels, adding loads of herby and floral-infused concoctions to the list. Test funky drinks like the crocodile coffee (infused with these sweet and salty berries) or the cold brew with star gooseberries, mulberries, and lemon. Talk about refreshing!
