Serious question here: who doesn’t like brunch?

The ideal combination between breakfast and lunch, brunch is perfect for a country like Italy. Here, waking up early — especially for a full-on breakfast — is not really a thing here, right? Plus, you’re on vacation, now is the time for snoozing (or not setting any) alarms, and enjoying a sleepy morning coupled with a leisurely lie-in.

Or, if you’re anything like me, I only start to get hungry around 10 am, so brunch o’clock for me has always been my idea of perfection.

In the Eternal City, we’ve prepared this ultimate guide to the best brunch in Rome. On this list, you’ll find our favorites including a combination of trendy, classic, Italian, and Westernized options. I think this is because the tourists which descend on Rome are a fusion of all kinds of globe trotters. And so, the city caters to this vibe. I’m not mad about it, and I am consistently falling in love with Rome’s brunch scene! Enjoy, indulge, and happy eating.

P.S. If you’re continuing on to Florence at all, don’t miss our guide to Florence’s amazing cafes for brunch hour, breakfast, or just an incredible coffee.

1. Variabile Drink & Food: Great for digital nomads, or friends

Signature coffee drinks, amaretto sours (and other fab cocktails), and good vibes, just like the neon wall signs insist, Variabile Drink & Food is an insta-worthy spot for the best brunch in Rome.

I’m a huge fan of salmon-anything when brunching (and for brekkie). And so, for me, the cream cheese toast topped with fresh smoked salmon, smashed avo, and two poached eggs is my idea of heaven. Alternatively, the two slices of toast with scrambled eggs and a wad of fresh salmon on the side. Both these orders are something I regularly munch down on at this time of day, so I was sold from the get-go.

Regular bennies, tomato soups topped with burrata balls, choc chip cookies, croissants (and other pastries), burgers, pasta, tiramisu and Italian classics such as ‘Vitello Tonnato and Funghi Porcini,’ i.e., veal with tuna sauce and mushrooms (with a slight twist) are examples of other menu items to eat your way through.

2. ViVi – Le Serre: Greenhouse garden vibes

I’m not going to lie, mention the words ‘garden restaurant’ to me, and I’m instantly sold. Vivi – Le Serre is a botanical oasis, where every corner is alive with plants, florals, and color

The eclectic decor is right up my alley, and if that’s your kind of thing, fall head over heels for different types of hanging lantern lights, sofas, pillows, throws, and other cute seating nooks.

Food is classically Italian. Who doesn’t love a good beef tartare (this one served with a beurre blanc, slithers of king oyster mushrooms, and fresh nasturtium leaves)? You can also indulge in one of the best street food in Rome here: Carciofo alla Giudia — that’s deep-fried artichoke, FYI.

3. Dolce Roma: Sweet or savory bliss

Waffles loaded with fresh fruit, churros, beetroot ravioli filled with truffles, Hawaiian chicken served in bamboo steaming baskets, American-style burgers with bacon, and potato croquette (basically a rosti) topped with Philly cream cheese and salmon tartare…Dolce Roma is a delicious amalgamation of everyone’s favorite brunch-time bites from around the world…and then some!

Comprising two levels of food bliss, this restaurant-meets-pasticceria knows how to do its sweet and savory just as well as the other.

From Monday to Friday they only open from 5.30 pm until late (2 am). However, Saturdays and Sundays are dedicated to us brunchers searching out the best brunch in Rome, opening specifically with a brunch-time menu from 10 am onwards!

4. Angie’s Restaurant & Cocktail Bar: Classy and creative

Fantastico vino, 18th-century frescoes, and creatively presented plates of food; Angie’s Restaurant & Cocktail Bar is classy, imaginative, and one of my favorite spots for a cute daytime date!

I’m well into the interiors here (it’s one of my weaknesses when picking out a place to eat), specifically the dusty pink suede sofas.

Onto the food! For brunch, enjoy ordering/choosing from an array with the likes of pancakes, bagels, granola bowls, rye bread with avocado slices, smoked salmon rolls and fried eggs, and croissants with a selection of spreads including Nutella and lemon curd. You’ll want to come here when you’re hungry. In short, this is the place for when its time to feast!

5. Piazzetta Ripetta: High tea options in an outdoor courtyard

With the sweetest courtyard setting, Piazette Ripetta is an ideal spot to come and read your book if you’re a solo traveler on the lookout for the best brunch in Rome.

Or, enjoy a cup of tea and a bagel (they also do a little afternoon tea vibe with pastries served on a tiered stand and everything), or a light and refreshing midday cocktail — because you’re on holiday. You’ll also find some world-class brunch o’clock options, from club sandwiches to omelets to a variety of brunch toasts.

The menu is super fresh, and I love that meals are not overly massive. For example, if you are in the mood for pasta, it’s a perfect serving size (and not skimping either).

6. Ristorante Coromandel: For those with a sweet tooth

I stumbled upon this vegan restaurant in Florence (Le Fate Bistrot), where a fairy runs the place, everything is tarot card themed, and you eat according to your zodiac sign. Ristorante Coromandel reminds me of a similar vibe, except this menu does feature meat.

Vintage-inspired is another word that comes to mind when entering this space, and even hints of teatime in the English countryside with the amount of jams and stewed fruits you see on the tables. Also, this is so random, but I love that the staff here wear matching, floral sets.

Scotch eggs, scrambled eggs and bacon pans, cinnamon rolls, pancake stacks, sweet bagels (layered with raspberry jam and cream cheese), and the likes please the patrons here, along with a pot of tea. It’s certainly one of the most unique options among this list of the best brunch in Rome.

7. Casa Vidaschi: Fairy-esque flower vibes

Bright, airy, and doubling as a flower boutique — say no more!

Casa Vidaschi is the type of place where you feel like the menu caters to all sorts of taste buds for brunch time, whether you’re in the mood for a small little mussel pot and a fresh lime zest cocktail, or instead feeling pancakes (choose between sweet pancakes with berries, cream and syrup, or savory served with salmon and avo) and delicious coffee.

This spot has so many picturesque corners. Whether you’re outside (recommended) or under the covered seating, prepare to want to take loads of pictures!

8. Peppa Bistrot: For out-the-box brunch options

“Candy” wrappers made from thin crepes holding a sweet surprise of gelato inside; pea, cream, and wheat flour savory pancakes with stracchino cheese, cured speck, and mixed salad; and pumpkin waffles laden with grilled pumpkin slices, gorgonzola mousse, and crispy ham — talk about inventive!

As someone who considers themself a “foodie,” you’ll find me here purely to try out the unique food compositions and ingredients, and how cool is it that they take traditional brunch/breakfast meals and turn them on their head? It’s kind of a no-brainer for me why Peppa Bistrot is a must-experience among the best brunch in Rome!

Oh, and you can’t leave without ordering a hot chocolate/coffee and dunking mini flapjacks inside!

9. Mister Tamo: Dedicated Sunday Brunch

I’m not 100% certain who the first person was to declare Sundays as an official brunch day, but Mister Tamo has stuck with it. Sundays here are all about brunch-time vibes.

During the rest of the days of the week, they are open from morning until evening, so you can wine and dine here all day long. However, Sunday is when the brunch menu magic happens.

Also, it’s worth noting that Mister Tamo open super early, I’m talking 6.30 am. If you are catching an early flight out or traveling in the morning, this caffetteria/bistrot/pizzeria/bar is a wonderful option for brekkie.

One of the dishes you should also try is their pizza cube! I’ve never seen one before, and quite honestly it reminds me of a Durban bunny chow (if you’ve ever visited this coastal South African city, the dug-out bread-loaf curry has garnered a name for itself worldwide so you might have heard of it before, too).

I absolutely love Rome, and one of my favorite areas to stay in is Trastevere. For those who take their wining and dining super seriously, like me, don’t miss these best restaurants in Trastevere. Or, for a the ultimate Roman dining experience, be sure to book a table at any of these ristoranti for some of the best carbonara of your life — after all, the city invented the pasta dish!
