Born and bred in South Africa, I don’t think I need to elaborate on how important animals are to me. I’m a mega animal advocate and hate the injustices committed by the meat industry against our animals!

Whilst I’m not vegetarian anymore, I still love a fantastic vegan restaurant. Vietnamese cuisine includes tons of vegetables, and as many dishes are rice-based, you’re actually in great hands when sourcing local vegan/vegetarian food. This is particularly true in the stunning city of Hoi An – the vegan restaurants in Hoi An hold their own against the bigger cities in Vietnam, so you will not be disappointed.

Useful phrase for vegans in Vietnam

The word “vegan” isn’t common in Vietnam (there’s actually no Vietnamese word for vegan), but as the country continues to grow in popularity among travelers and expats, restaurants in heavy tourist towns and cities have noticed the trend and followed suit. If you’re vegan and hunting down the most mouth-watering vegan restaurants in Hoi An, prepare to fall in love!

  • Vegetarian = người ăn chay
  • No meat = không thịt
  • No dairy = không có sữa

In this list, I’ve also included one or two plant-based cafes that are primarily vegan, but do a few vegetarian menu items (usually on the breakfast front, containing eggs or selling coffee with dairy). But they’re just simply too good to leave off of this list – and most items are vegan!

Hoi An’s Best Vegan Restaurants

1. Chickpea Eatery – For vegan banh mi, bun cha and even cheese

If anyone ever told you that plant-based food was boring, just wait until you get a load of the eye-popping, colorful, and artfully presented plates from Chickpea Eatery; one of the most incredible vegan restaurants in Hoi An that also offers vegan cooking classes

Local tip: Chickpea Eatery’s class is the first fully vegan cooking class in all of Vietnam.

The dishes take inspiration from traditional homestyle Vietnamese cooking, all inspired by the owner’s mom’s cooking. This is one of my favorite things about Chickpea: you’re not missing out on Vietnamese classics just because you’re vegan.

On the menu, there are fresh spring rolls, bao buns (highly recommend), banh mi, stir fry morning glory, banh xeo, bun cha, and plenty more. Meats are replaced with elements like tofu, chickpea tempeh, and soy sausage. You also have to try the vegan cheese here — oh my word! Looking at the varieties (made from cashews), you’d never expect the aged, spiced, and herbed cheeses to be vegan. They’re perfect for a mezze platter.

2. Sua Cafe Vegan Food – An eatery doing amazing things

From the outside, Sua Cafe looks like any common Vietnamese restaurant in the super local areas. But a world of vegan wonders awaits you inside.

The menu options are extensive. Enjoy classic Vietnamese flavors, from fried rice to spring rolls, plus Sua also offers a Vietnamese set meal (with spring rolls, tofu in tomato sauce, purple yam soup, cao lầu noodles, watermelon, and more) — great for sharing.

Or, tuck into dishes from other Asian countries, such as Malaysia-style vermicelli, dumplings, wontons, Thai hot pot, and grilled Japanese mushrooms with sate. There are also plenty of Western dishes, including salads, vegan ribs, pasta, etc., as well as a coffee and wine list.

A huge part of this restaurant’s mission is assisting minority ethnic groups around the Quang Nam mountain range. In fact, 10% of profits go back to the community through its Ong Van Charity Project. I love that — heart emoji. Sua Cafe has coffee-making and tasting workshops, and it’s another spot with vegan cooking classes available.

3. The Fisherman – Right on the beach with ocean views

Okay, I know the name makes you think of a fish and chip shop, but it’s not what you think. The Fisherman is, however, located down on An Bang Beach, hence the name. It’s a lovely little change from the dozens of seafood-heavy restaurants lining the beachfront down here. But don’t worry, there aren’t any fish friends on this menu – just pure vegan bliss.

It’s got that typical beachy vibe which I just love, and colorful murals, beanbags, and billowing sheets brighten up the space.

What’s on the menu? For breakfast, think brekkie burrito (tofu scrambled with turmeric, black beans, capsicum, tomato, and avo) and vegan pancakes. For lunch, order an array of sweet potato fries — is there anything better — along with a summer salad (I love a little bit of fresh mango in a salad), and fried veggie spring rolls. As dinner rolls along, order noodles with tofu and falafel, zoodles with avo pesto, and a vegan burger, to name a few.

P.S. They also do a cocktail happy hour between 2 pm and 7 pm. Arriba!

4. V Vegan Restaurant – For quintessential vegan Vietnamese

You’ll have a hard time deciding what not to eat at V Vegan, everything here is just so moreish. It shows off the true flavors of Hoi An. As one of the top vegan restaurants in Hoi An celebrating local cuisine, it’s located smack bang amid the Old Town.

Just like all of the gorgeous terra cotta and lantern-lined restaurants around this part of Hoi An, V Vegan is no different, and the interiors are so inviting. It’s got an “upmarket” feel to it and looks out onto the energetic streets.

Must-try food recs? The crispy spinach and mushroom dumplings, summer rolls, pan-seared tofu steak, sautéd glass noodles, lotus seed fried rice, and any of the soups (I could live off soup and broths), and end off with a sweet treat of mango sorbet.

FYI, this restaurant is owned by Taste Vietnam, and they have a series of F&B outlets across Vietnam and Australia.

5. Lê Hội Bánh MÌ Chay (Le Hoi Vegan Banh Mi) – Unassuming local food stall in the Old Town

Staying true to the magic of a classic banh mi stand, one of the most famous Vietnamese foods is available in pure vegan form in Hoi An at Lê Hội Bánh MÌ Chay, down to the last baguette crumb. You’ll spot this unassuming banh mi stand set up in the Old Town. Like many local Vietnamese food stalls, there’s no website or person to call; you simply rock up.

You can usually just order a banh mi without meat (không thịt), but a primary element of the typical banh mi is the egg component. At Le Hoi, every ingredient is 100% plant-based, so there is no such thing as egg touching your bread here. Pate is replaced with mushroom, and the roll is loaded with fresh veg ingredients.

It’s also ridiculously affordable at just 15,000 dong (US$0.60) a banh mi! And it’s one of the only few vegan restaurants in Hoi An that offers a pure vegan banh mi.

6. nourish eatery – Trendy vibes; excellent coffee

To be honest with you, Nourish would be at the top of my list of the best vegan restaurants in Hoi An if it weren’t for a few items that aren’t 100% vegan, but rather vegetarian. But purely based on the vibes, quality of food, and incredible coffee, Nourish has been my go-to brekkie cafe when I am visiting Hoi An.

It always reminded me of the trendy cafes you find in Australia and doubles as a stunning space for digital nomads

They do breakfast tacos, nutty toasts, buddha and granola bowls, hummus toasties, pulled mushroom burgers with a peri peri sauce, and, of course, incredible coffee. As I said, it’s got that classic Aussie cafe vibe, and we all know how seriously Australians take their coffee drinking. I remember it was the talk of the town when one of my mates actually had a bad coffee in Melbourne.

7. The SEEDS – As fresh as it gets

Bright pink vegan beetroot spaghetti with cashew cream sauce, vegan pho, vegan veggie stir-fried brown rice vermicelli, fresh spring rolls, vegan Vietnamese pancakes, vegan wonton soup, vegan curry soup, a plant-powered burger served on green homemade spinach buns with vegan tempeh and fresh veg. The list goes on and on at The SEEDS

Feeling the sweeter side of life? You’re still spoiled for choice when it comes to vegan desserts: avo-based cakes, beetroot brownies, vegan cinnamon rolls, and vegan banana bread with jam.

The smoothies are also banging. Go for the ‘Reddy Lassi’ (homemade strawberry jam, mango, banana, and coconut milk). ‘Greener’ is made from spinach, banana, avo, and soya milk; or opt for the ‘Hoi An Land’ (mango, passion fruit and soya) which is my all-time favorite, especially in summer.

With a little bit of everything, it’s one of the yummiest vegan restaurants in Hoi An.

8. Veggie Saigon – Diversity of cuisines

No, it’s not in Saigon and no, it’s not vegetarian, but Veggie Saigon is a vegan franchise hailing from HCMC.

Traveling as a large group, or a couple of you plant-based eaters can’t make up your mind about what type of food you’re in the mood for? This spot is a fabulous option with its diverse menu of Vietnamese, Thai, Indian, Chinese, and Western-style options (although the latter is a little limited). On that note, the menu is seasonal, so new dishes are constantly added — amazing!

To get your tastebuds tantalized, here are some examples: veggie burgers, veggie summer rolls, tempura mushroom, fried tofu balls, vegan Italian-style spaghetti, veggie pad thai, veggie Hue noodle soup, Vietnamese banana flower salad, and a whole load of other mouth-watering menu items.

Suffer from any intolerances like gluten or nut allergies? Just let your waiter know when ordering – they are more than happy to accommodate. Among the vegan restaurants in Hoi An, there’s a little something for all tastebuds on the menu at this eatery.

9. Good Eats Hoi An – Another fab spot for digital nomads

A gorgeous courtyard seting, an overhaul of fresh greens, i.e., all the tropical plants, and quaint peaceful spaces to sip back on excellent coffee or delicious smoothies. I love everything about this place!

Similarly to nourish eatery, Good Eats Hoi An is technically classified as a vegetarian restaurant, but most of the menu is vegan-focused.

Your perfect meal? A vegan-based burger, a purple berry smoothie, and layered chocolate cheesecake! Also, I mentioned what a big soup fan I am earlier, and I love that Good Eats has some really hearty options, like lentil pumpkin soup (lentil soup is always my go-to if it’s on a menu and is super filling), roasted tomato soup, and gyoza soup — did someone say wontons?!
