If you had to do a quick Google search of the top areas in Bali for foodies, time and time again, you’d be pointed in Canggu’s direction

Some of us love restaurant-going, some of us prefer the more laid-back vibes of a cafe, especially great for meeting up with friends or catching up on work

Luckily, in Canggu, you’re spoiled for choice no matter which you favor. Cafes are a great option for breakfast or brunch, I always say. And often, I prefer the more relaxed atmosphere of a cafe. Not only limited to morning hours, a lot of the best cafes in Canggu open from the start of the day until evening, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are even spots for cocktails with your meal. Just because it’s a cafe, who’s to say you can’t enjoy a glass of vino with your meal? (Hint: no one!

Here are eight popular options, including Canggu cafes serving excellent speciality coffee, as well as matchas

1. Gigi Susu: Order the giant croissant

Bread and pastryholics, Gigi Susu even has its own pastry/coffee window for if you’re en route to catch some surf, or on your post-wave party! (Just keep your eyes open for the pink bougainvillaeas leading the way.)

But it’s also a stunning little spot to sit down for a morning cuppa or a delicious Caesar salad (my weakness) for lunchtime.

Serving distinctly western-style plates of food, it’s one of the best cafes in Canggu for classics like a carbonara with a crisp glass of wine, or smashed avo on toast served with smoked salmon and a poached egg. The cakes and cocktails are fab, too.

P.S. They’re famous for their oversized croissants, which you MUST dip into a cappuccino.

2. Zin Cafe: Great spot for digital nomads

Whether you’re here to clock in some work (where excellent coffee is always served), grab a healthy bite to eat (that’s not boring), or simply here to gather with friends for a fresh coconut (or cocktail), Zin Cafe is a hot spot!

Drawing in the crowds is its super airy, bamboo-infused atmosphere. I don’t know if it’s just me, but being surrounded by light woods automatically equates to a calming atmosphere, right?

Food-wise, expect a combination of west-meets-east flavours, from Asian tuna steak with a sesame crust to the Korean eggs benedict to a divinely fresh falafel plate

Nice to know: discover comedy nights here, too!

3. Blou Cafe: Pool time!

Where I come from (South Africa), the word ‘blou’ means blue in Afrikaans (one of my country’s official languages, very similar to Dutch and even sometimes German). The team behind Blou Cafe were definitely inspired, in my books, by the name for the colour. Everything here bounces off blue hues…Blue plates…Blue trays…And of course, the lovely blue pool at the heart of this cafe

Also, side note, I sometimes find that when a place has a pool, the food kind of slips, but that’s not the case here! Everything is really yummy, like the fresh smoothie bowls bursting with vibrancy to the toasts served with a beetroot hummus smear, or the chicken and waffles

Feel free to lounge around the pool, and they have floating meals here as well.

4. Pennylane: Purely for the aesthetics

I love aesthetically pleasing interiors as much as I love good food. Luckily for all of us, hunting down the best cafes in Canggu, Pennylane has both to offer you!

As you walk through the garden courtyard, the ceiling comprises an overhang of greenery, like a canopy full of flowers and leaves. In the centre is a water fountain sporting the rock n roll ‘Sign of Horns.’ Other sections adorn soft billowing sheets from the roof, tousled with fairy lights, cacti, huge mirror motifs, and chunky carved seats and tables (that remind me of GOT). Then, other parts have a totally Moroccan feel

Whether you’re in the mood for something light to eat (paired oh-so-well with a round of cocktails) or a full-on breakfast or brunch, the menu here has got you covered! I’m a sucker for the burrata cheese and hummus, with toasted pita triangles, basil pesto, and halved cherry tomatoes.

5. Miel: For the coffee enjoyers

All of my friends know: invite me for coffee and you’d better make certain that the coffee is on fleek. And by that I mean strong! It’s no wonder I find myself in espresso heaven whenever I visit Italy. But this isn’t Italy. Miel, however, is a top spot under the best cafes in Canggu for divine — and perfectly roasted — beans.

After all, they are a speciality coffee-meets-brew bar! Between the seven weekdays, they have a Single Origin & Blend rotation. And in case you were wondering, yes, they do serve matcha lattes here.

The food menu is nourishing and the perfect accompaniment to a great coffee. Think simple avo toasts with salmon and cucumber crowns; scrambled egg bowls with caviar; and a wonderful selection of pastries.

6. Revolver: An iconic institution, especially for coffee lovers

Coffee snobs, if you go mad for Arabica beans, renowned for their sweeter profile but complex notes like chocolate, nuts, and flowers, find yourself way impressed by Revolver. They are a cafe, but at the soul of this place is the coffee. They’re all about their coffee. Their coffee is so good, they’ve even opened up shop at Bali’s airport! That’s really telling about their standard. Moreover, they even produce their own coffee pods.

Revolver has been around since 2012, and now, with multiple locations around the island, including its place as one of the best cafes in Canggu.

My ever-sweet tooth tugs on me whenever I am here, especially for the ‘Revs pavlova,’ which is such a nostalgic dessert for me. This one is done with fresh summer berries!

7. KYND: A social media playground

Even if you’ve never been to Bali before, there’s a really, REALLY good chance you’ve seen one of the thousands of influencers post about the (iconic) all-pink KYND Community cafe online. With over 151k followers on Instagram, it’s safe to say that this spot is not only one of the best cafes in Canggu, but also one of Bali’s most popular and recognisable.

I feel like they started the whole smoothie bowl with cut-out fruit letters trend, too. In fact, I am 99% certain that they did.

Everything about it is cutesy, from the pink tables with baby pink and white checkered tablecloths to the cocktails. Gin drinkers, try the Sour Peaches with notes of elderflower and peach, finished with a gold star stirrer and a rainbow sour candy

8. 7 A.M. Bakers: European flavors

I love the concept behind 7 A.M. Bakers, which totally transforms as the clock strikes 19:00 and the cafe converts into 7 P.M. Diners. I think it’s genius!

So, for those morning fellas headed here, full up on tofu scramble toast or a croissant benedict. Lunch-time attendees, the seared tuna nicoise salad is divine, and I am so into the fact that real tuna steaks are used, not the tinned kind! The truffle croque madame is mouth-watering!

For dinner, the French beef tartare is a scrumptious starter, then for mains, the pulled pork bun is where it’s at!

Rounding things up on an extra high food note, why not tuck into some of my other lists of the best spots in the neighbourhood apart from the best cafes in Canggu? Here are my top picks of the best restaurants in Canggu, as well as the top bars in the area!
