Hailing from sunny South Africa, Durban in particular, I grew up in the water. The city which I’m from is hot and humid all year round — we’re lucky if temperatures reach below 20 degrees Celsius in winter — and most of my childhood was spent in the swimming pool or the ocean, frolicking and surfing. (My parents literally had to tear me out of the water).

Needless to say, I’m a beach freak through and through, and most times I center my travels (especially in Southeast Asia) around incredible beach destinations.

Nestled in Central Vietnam, Danang is one of the country’s most favored and frequented beach destinations. Average annual temperatures sit at around 25 degrees Celsius, but the hottest months (June to August) soar to 38-40! It’s balmy, tropical, and an ideal place to laze entire days on beachy shores; swimming, doing water sports, and even snorkeling

If you’re after those ridiculously see-through waters like in the Maldives and parts of Thailand, you won’t find it here. Rather the ocean in Danang is similar to Sri Lanka and Malaysia

Travel tip: if you are seeking the whole transparent oceanic vibes, consider Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island in the south.

However, the water in Danang is typically warm and relatively flat with some small waves depending on the beach. To help you navigate a beach-hopping adventure, here are the 9 best beaches in Danang to get you going.

1. My Khe Beach: Danang’s main beach

Every beach-y blessed city sports one main beach, and My Khe Beach is Danang’s equivalent.

Spanning ten kilometers of fine white sand, it’s often listed as one of the best beaches in Danang thanks to its setting, easy-to-reach location (running all along the beachfront parallel to the city), and tons of outdoor oceanic activities. These include swimming, surfing, — or learning how to — kayaking, jet skiing, parasailing, SUPing, and kitesurfing. Discover plenty of rental shops with surfboards, jet skis, etc. for hire, as well as umbrellas and sun loungers.

The beach is technically split into three beach sections and runs from the Son Tra peninsula to Ngu Hanh Son (in the direction of Hoi An). Other beaches along this strip include:

To the right-hand side:

  • Palm tree-dotted Non Nuoc Beach
  • Less touristy Bac My An Beach — difficult to pick up on maps, its Vietnamese name is Bãi biển Bắc Mỹ An.

To the left-hand side:

  • Pham Van Dong Beach (connected to My Khe by the promenade)

2. Rang Beach (Bãi Rạng): Rocky crops and fewer crowds

I’m secretly a mermaid and wherever I am in the world, am more than happy to travel a little out of the heave of any city to hunt down a wonderful beach.

Forming part of the Son Tra Peninsula (but just as you enter this part of Danang to the south), the beach is made up of little rocky pools and thatch huts dotting the shoreline for when you need a break from the sunshine. There’s even a cute short wooden bridge leading to the water.

Feel like a sun lizard bathing on the gigantic rocks, or maneuver just past the rocky shore for a refreshing dip.

Travel tip: The Son Tra beach area (where Bai Rang is situated) is home to Bai Da Den, Bac Beach, i.e., North Beach, and Tien Sa Beach. I’ll touch more on some of the stand-out beaches in this area later!

P.S. Sunset seekers, this is a top spot for Golden Hour

3. Bãi Cát Vàng: Golden Sand Beach

Bãi Cát Vàng reminds me of the beaches around eastern Thailand, particularly Koh Chang. Cradled between luscious greenery, wild palms dot the intimate coastline and it has a very “untouched” kinda vibe about it.

The half-moon bay is only about 200 meters, with rocks on either side, and there’s also a small resort here. Thanks to its makeup, the sheltered area is a well-loved spot for some snorkeling action, or enjoy frolicking around in the calm waters.

Garnering the name “Golden Sand Beach,” as you’d expect, the sand is a golden-ish shade (not bright white) and creates stunning hues when the sun rises and sets.

Hunt down Bãi Cát Vàng in the Son Tra Peninsula, and with its desolate surroundings, nature (including animals) absolutely flourishes. Out of the best beaches in Danang, opt for this one if you’re looking to escape the crowds.

4. Bãi biển Nam Ô: Fishing Village

Wild and rugged are great adjectives to describe Bãi biển Nam Ô — one of the most unique beachscapes from my list of best beaches in Danang.

Black rocks jut out covered in green sea moss, which gives this oceanic landscape an almost fairytale-like vibe. As the sun begins to rise and the whole evaporation process begins, there’s a gentle mist that flitters over the scene making it even more magical.

It’s such a beautiful spot for some morning meditation and is out of the city on the way to Hue side.

Nam O Beach forms part of the Nam O Fishing Village, where Vietnam’s famous fish sauce (nuoc mam) has been produced since the 19th century!

5. Lang Co Beach: Soft sands and no one in sight

Are you up for a (stunningly scenic) drive? Roughly 40 minutes from Danang, or one hour from My Khe Beach, Lang Co Beach is a gorgeous white sand beach, with texture so soft it falls through your fingers like glitter.

It’s an hour and 15 minutes from Hue, so it’s also a lovely break in between if you’re headed to the Imperial City and keen on some beach bliss beforehand. Or a delicious seafood lunch!

Expect little to no people; with hardly anyone around this deems it quite a romantic spot for couples seeking soulful moments with one another away from the crowds, and perfect for a cute beach picnic

Good to know: It’s also not far from Bach Ma National Park (about 35 minutes), and the Lap An Lagoon is right next door.

6. Thanh Binh Beach: Windless conditions

Are you traveling with kids and searching for a beach where the waters are always calm? Thanh Binh Beach is within a protected cove en route to the Hai Van Pass and seldom experiences hard winds.

Both the water and sand are slightly darker in color in comparison to, say, My Khe. However, watersports are totally doable down here thanks to its one-kilometer rock-free shoreline

Also because of its windless positioning (which means little water disruption), travelers often go snorkeling around these parts. There’s no insane reef, but it’s still a fun activity for the little ones

7. Ghenh Bang Beach: The hidden gem

You know what they say about places off the beaten track … Well, I don’t know what they say, but I always say hidden gems are worth the trek to find them. Case in point, Ghenh Bang Beach — one of the best beaches in Danang for diving. But again, I want to reiterate; snorkeling and diving in Vietnam is nothing like Thailand, Indonesia, etc.

Certainly one for the adventurers, it’s a bit of a mission to reach, missioning through some forested areas to get here, but it’s worth it!

There are few people in sight, the water is always clean and often transparent, and it’s also a popular place among locals for night camping.

Craggy rock pools make it ideal for snorkeling, too. But please be careful, the waves can get quite strong, there are no lifeguards around, and it’s very deserted.

8. Bãi Biển Làng Vân: An adventurous day trip

Signaling the start of the breathtaking Hai Van Pass (marked by Jeremy Clarkson as one of the most beautiful roads to drive…in the entire world), Lang Van Beach is rarely on tourists’ radars.

This works in your favor though: fewer people don’t just equal a quiet reprieve, but you feel as if you have the entire South China Sea (part of the Pacific Ocean) all to yourself.

Vistas above the beach match in beauty, and half the excitement is getting here. If you feel comfortable enough, I would 100% recommend hiring a scooter and driving here — it’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments! Once you arrive, there’s a short 15-minute walk to get to the actual beach area.

9. Hòn Sơn Chà: Island paradise

So, technically Hòn Sơn Chà is not actually in Danang, nor en route to Hue or even Hoi An. Rather, it’s a small islet out at sea not far from the city. But don’t let that deter you, there are local boats that transport beach-goers here daily. Or, some even choose to canoe over to the island.

Home to a coral reef inhabited by various fish species, coral, and seaweed varieties, visitors love this spot for snorkeling

You’ll notice the water is a different color from the other best beaches in Danang and has more of that deep transparent aquamarine tint. It’s also known as Pearl Island.
